Peter Dinklage, Mila Kunis & Robin Williams

The story of a locum who mistakenly tells a patient he has only an hour and a half to live, The Angriest Man in Brooklyn has had Robin Williams in place as its lead (said patient and presumably, angriest man) since late last year. Joining him for the dark comedy will be Peter Dinklage, currently starring as Tyrion Lannister in HBO’s Game of Thrones, and Mila Kunis, who can next be seen in Seth MacFarlane’s crude soft toy picture, Ted.

Is the world ready for Rebekah Brooks: The Movie?

on Fri, 05/18/2012 - 16:09
Rebekah Brooks

“She’s a great story. Her rise…is almost like Great Expectations – with a moral.” These were the words of producer Gene Kirkwood at Cannes yesterday, part of the team planning to turn a Vanity Fair article about Rebekah Brooks into a feature biopic. So in that analogy, presumably Rupert Murdoch is the Magwitch to Brooks’ Pip? They do share the Australian connection we suppose…

New trailer arrives for Magic Mike feat. Channing Tatum, now with extra gyrating!

on Fri, 05/18/2012 - 15:43
Magic Mike

We met Mike, Channing Tatum’s male stripper character in the first full trailer for Magic Mike a few weeks ago, and now a little more of him is on show in this next instalment. An adult entertainer who dreams of giving up the thrusting and cod-pieces to design quirky custom furniture, the film sees Mike become the mentor to Alex Pettyfer’s new stripping recruit, and the love interest of his mentee’s sister.

It’s all kicking off in new Prometheus poster

Prometheus poster

Here’s a little treat to send us off into the weekend: it’s the latest poster for Ridley Scott’s much-trailed Prometheus. Out in the UK on the 1st of June, Scott’s film is shaping up to be a parable about the dangers of extending mankind’s reach and delving into things that, all told, we’d really have been better off not delving into, as illustrated by the chaotic destruction of this new poster. Yikes.

Elizabeth Banks lands lead in new dark comedy from creator of Six Feet Under and True Blood

Elizabeth Banks

The annual bout of deal-making at Cannes is moving on swiftly, with films changing hands, and casts being confirmed daily. The latest news casting news concerns Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games, Man on a Ledge), who’s been nabbed for the title role in Alan Ball’s What’s the Matter with Margie?

Juno Temple to play "superficial pixie" Thistletwit in Disney’s Maleficent

on Fri, 05/18/2012 - 08:42
Juno Temple

Thistletwit, Thistletwit, Thistletwit… now there’s a tongue-twister. Juno Temple will have to get used to it, as she’s been cast in the role in Disney’s upcoming Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie. Temple joins Imelda Staunton and Lesley Manville as one of three pixies tasked with looking after Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning) in the film, to be directed by visual effects whiz Robert Stromberg.

Sean Bean and Sean Pertwee join WWII action-horror The 4th Reich

Sean Bean and Sean Pertwee

Nazis weaponising the supernatural popped up as a theme in last year’s Captain America: The First Avenger, and Nazis-in-space pic Iron Sky (out next week) sees Hitler’s cronies utilising sci-fi powers to re-invade Earth, so Sean Bean’s new action horror The 4th Reich will be in (we hesitate to say good… but at least) company when it eventually arrives on our screens.

Trailer here for The Words feat. Bradley Cooper

on Fri, 05/18/2012 - 07:56
The Words

The first we saw from the Brian Klugman/Lee Sternthal drama The Words was this nifty poster, and now a (fairly overwrought, if we’re honest) full trailer has been released for the picture. It’s the story of a writer (Bradley Cooper) who only earns success after plagiarising another man’s work, and the snippet below points to a film composed of meaningful staring and tortured lite-rock.

007 is back! First Skyfall poster arrives

Skyfall

When you have a ready-made iconic image, why deviate? The first teaser poster for Skyfall is a classic look, showing Daniel Craig as Bond in a sharp suit, holding what looks like the Walther PPK and walking down that well-known gun barrel.

Philip Seymour Hoffman set for Anton Corbijn’s A Most Wanted Man

on Thu, 05/17/2012 - 16:16
Philip Seymour Hoffman

The last John Le Carré adaptation released in cinemas did alright as far as we remember (Oscar nominations, rave reviews, you know, all that gubbins), which bodes rather well for the upcoming Anton Corbijn-directed thriller A Most Wanted Man. Something else that bodes well for the picture is the involvement of Philip Seymour Hoffman, who’s now been confirmed for the role of the “roguish chief of a covert German spy unit” in the film, which is due to begin filming in Hamburg this September.

Gary Oldman, Liam Hemsworth and Harrison Ford confirmed for thriller, Paranoia

Gary Oldman,Liam Hemsworth and Harrison Ford

The Cannes Film Festival, we should remember, isn't all about sunburn and baguettes. A considerable amount of wheeling and dealing also goes on in La Croisette and in the course of exactly that, one property has emerged as a hot title: Joseph Finder adaptation, Paranoia. It’s a thriller about a boss (that probably just refers to someone who employs people, but with Ford and Oldman in the cast, we're thinking the other meaning could apply too) who blackmails a young employee into spying on a rival company.

Helena Bonham Carter and Kathy Bates join The Young and Prodigious Spivet, from the director of Amélie

on Thu, 05/17/2012 - 09:36
Helena Bonham Carter and Kathy Bates

The director of the charming Amélie and 2009’s quirky MicMacs, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, is turning for only the second time to an English-language feature (seeing as the first was the less-than-well-received Alien: Resurrection, you can see why he might be reluctant), and he’s nabbed a couple of decent actresses for the job. Helena Bonham Carter and Kathy Burke are to star in Jeunet’s The Young and Prodigious Spivet (we wouldn't be surprised if that title underwent a further trim in coming months) based on Reif Larsen’s 2009 novel The Selected Works of T.S Spivet.

10 movie stars whose music careers never took off

on Thu, 05/17/2012 - 08:16

Everyone dreams of being a rock star, don’t they? Most of us have had a go at playing air guitar, or singing into our hairbrushes, even if we wouldn’t inflict our dubious musical talents on other people. There’s just something irresistibly glamorous about the idea of being a famous musician. So much so, apparently, that even celebrities aren’t immune to the siren call of the rock ‘n’ roll dream. Here are ten actors who’ve tried, and largely failed, to launch a secondary career as musicians…

Nasty early footage of Maniac remake arrives

on Thu, 05/17/2012 - 08:06
Maniac

We’re not in the Shire any more Toto… Elijah Wood’s latest big-screen role has a distinctly nasty edge. Well, seeing as he plays a serial killer who hunts and scalps women, it would, wouldn’t it?

Larry David to lead new Greg Mottola-directed comedy

on Thu, 05/17/2012 - 07:49
Larry David

Working in the style to which he’s accustomed in class HBO comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry David’s next big-screen role is to be largely improvised, working from a script outline by The Dictator co-writers Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel.
